Nerine Shatner, a model and aspiring actress married to actor William Shatner, died of an apparent drowning Monday in the pool behind the couple’s Studio City house. She was 40.
According to Craig Harvey, chief of operations for the L.A. County Coroner’s Office, the cause of death is being deferred pending toxicological and other tests.
“At this state of the game we have no reason to think it is not an accident,” he told Daily Variety, “(but) we have to investigate whether there are any mitigating circumstances.”
Shatner, born Nerine Kidd, did magazine and commercial work as a model, and just started acting. Most recently, she worked on a children’s show, “A Twist in the Tale,” which starred her husband.
The couple married in November 1997. It was his third marriage and her first.
William Shatner filed for divorce in October of last year, but according to Nerine Shatner’s agent, Pam Loar of L.A. Talent, the two subsequently reconciled.

“The last she said to me was how important her marriage was and she was doing all she could to make it last,” Loar told Daily Variety. “It seemed like that was being accomplished.”
Loar added that Nerine Shatner’s death was particularly shocking because she was very active and an excellent swimmer.
In addition to her husband, Shatner is survived by her mother, two brothers and a sister.
A private service for family and friends will be held Saturday.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the Nerine Shatner Memorial Fund, the Friendly House, 347 S. Normandie Ave., Los Angeles, 90020.
